Stop Proscrastinating

refi_clock_ticking.jpg

I have to stop procrastinating, especially when I have datelines. Trying to motivate myself to get rid of that bad habit, I check few online life coach sites. Check this one out. This site is useful though the layout is very plain without any images. Oh, BTW the angry lady with the clock image was taken from this site, which has nothing to do with today’s entry.

While browsing the Reallifesolutions site, I subscribed to few free reports related to all these self-development issues. I just can’t wait to see the content on tips for mom’s business online, they will teach you for 9 days for free. Perhaps I can learn a new thing or two through the ecourse. But whatever it is I have to stop procrastinating if I want things to be done..haha! :)

Food

Comfort Food

sataysetblog.jpg

I think people associate comfort food with food that when they eat it, it will give them the feeling of security, good vibes and happiness. Reading the definition of comfort food in Wikipedia makes me think whether I have the same definition of comfort food.

For me comfort food is food that reminisce the good old time, happy memories of my life. Food that when you eat them, will make you think of those happy days when you are much, much younger, the time when your mom makes the dishes for you it makes you think of the simple, easy life, just you and the bowl of that instant noodle..hehehe..

Well maybe that’s my kind of definition, but check this out, people all around the world have their own recipes of comfort food. Check also this site. It has bigger picture of the food, and I just love good food picture. :)

While you are browsing, feel good to drop by this site. BTW, the picture of the satay set is from my own food picture collections. Google about satay if you are not from my side of the world..haha..

Gardening

The Herbs Garden

vallarisglabra.jpg

I’ve been planning this for years, but my progress is still restricted because it’s not easy to find herbs plants, especially the flowerly scented herbs. I found this site which list down almost all known Asian herbs.

I really love the list though the name sounds different but at least the pictures will help to differentiate. At the moment I have about 10 Asian herbs plants in my small garden. Hope the collection will grow over time.

Branding Is Not Selling Out: It’s Selling In

By Kim Castle, BrandU®
[NOTE: Some words in this article have been disguised to avoid triggering sp^m filters.]

Ever see an amazing band perform and wonder why you’ve never heard of them before? Ever see an astonishing artist on the street and wonder why isn’t their work isn’t in a gallery? Ever see an astounding independent film and wonder why people all over the world don’t know about it?

Me too!

It breaks my heart to know that there are musicians, painters, sculptors, and filmmakers everywhere starving. Starving… for their art.

Why is a branding expert like me, who mostly deals with entrepreneurs and small business owners, addressing musicians, artists, and filmmakers? It’s simple. Artists are the ultimate entrepreneurs.

Think about it. Some create products and look for a market; others look at a market and create products. Every entrepreneur starts the same way! It’s the notion of business that often trips artists up.

Creating any piece of music, art, or film, is like creating a product. I’m not suggesting that all products, art-based or otherwise, are equal. We all know a good product, or painting, or film or vacuum cleaner when we experience it. It’s just with some artists, imaginary barriers get created. These illusive barriers can keep them from creating the very success they want.

All creators have the same goals: to make a good product that is useful or meaningful, have it well liked by many people and to be paid proportionally to the market they reach. Who doesn’t want that? Making music, paintings, sculptures, photography or film should be addressed like any business with the same attention to the big picture, IF you want to make a great living from it. But something often holds artistic creators back from making a great living from their art.

As usual fear is the culprit.

Artists sometimes fear that if they develop the recognition and finan*cial success that comes from branding from them ‘selves’, their peers will think that they’ve ‘sold-out’ if they ‘make it’. Fellow starving artists might say that on the surface, but what they are really saying is that they are envious of the success that you have created. It’s far easier to put down someone else’s success than to make it them self. What’s more important: what your peers think OR having your ‘art’ enjoyed by as many people as possible and having the finan*cial fre*edom that comes along with it?

Another fear that may prevent artists from taking their craft mainstream is that they think that they will lose control of it by becoming a business and, heaven forbid, a BIG business at that. Just like the art you make, what your business becomes is in your control. If you develop your brand based on your vision of it from the start, you protect it from becoming something else. Business is not bad — people that run them can make bad decisions. The power of your business is always in your hands.

The largest fear for some artists is that the very nature of getting paid, and paid well, for their art will change it. This will then set in motion the loss of creative connection with the “art” itself. I would argue that those that get lost were not very centered on their purpose and passion in the first place.

It’s odd to think that finan*cial fre*edom, the fre*edom to do whatever you want, could cause one to lose their way. In one of our workshops, we were fortunate to have a successful artist who was ready to take his brand to the next level. When I asked him what does he do, he answered, “Whatever I want.” Who doesn’t want that?!

With the money you get from branding your craft, you can set up systems so that it doesn’t interfere with your focus; donate to causes, invest in real estate, create other products/partnerships. You can even hire the people to manage it all. Leaving you free to… create.

The bottom line is simple, everyone has control over what they do and what they manifest, it’s just that most people haven’t been shown how. Commitment to your ‘art’ does not preclude your ability to make mo*ney from it. In fact, the more finan*cial fre*edom you create for yourself, the more art you can create.

A branding mindset is taking that control into your own hands and owning the future. And it must truly start from the inside — from your innate talent and your grand vision for your art. Branding your art comes down to your commitment to yourself and to the art itself. Branding is not only slogans and TV ads; it’s the power to be who you are and communicating it everyone proudly.

The definition of artist:

1. somebody who creates art
2. somebody who does something with great skill and creativity
3. somebody who is very good at doing something

Nowhere does it say you have to starve to make good art or good products.

Remember that the next time a musician, or painter, or sculptor, or filmmaker you know breaks through to success. Ask yourself, what are you really committed to? Don’t cheat the world of your gift. Developing a brand mindset with integrity from the inside out is guaranteed to reach more people. Period. You can even get help with a process.

If you do something that you really love, you’re really good at it, and people pay you to keep doing it, then branding it it’s not selling out, it’s selling in… to you!

On The Other Side of The World

Have you ever imagine been able to speak in different language, fluently, almost like a local, like Sidney Bristow, the main cast in TV series Alias or some other spy you watched in movies?

I do imagine myself being able to do so, at least in my country where 3 major ethnics groups have different language and dialects, the ability to at least grasp the basic vocabulary is good enough.

If you feel too old to attend language class, perhaps this is the answer. Check this site. They provide complete digital versions of the well known language courses from the FSI (Foreign Service Institute). What they mean is when you learn the language, you learn it like the diplomats, FBI, DEA agents did - with the original material developed by the US State Department’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI). That’s sound cool, huh!

These courses are usually available in form of audio cassettes and books and are quite expensive in most stores. Their pure digital version is available to be downloaded for only 29.99USD. In fact this price is for the whole course!

I just love it. I found this site which is actually the portfolio online for photographer, Michael Ray.

Quoted from the site, “Michael is a nationally acclaimed, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania based, food photographer, noted for his beautiful lighting techniques. He routinely supplies clients with dramatically lit, custom food photographs for advertising, packaging, editorial, and cookbook projects. Ad agencies, graphic design firms, grocery stores, restaurants, catering companies, and food manufactures, have asked Michael to do his lighting magic for their food related projects both in his 3000 square-foot studio or on location in the client’s facility.

Michael Ray’s clients include, Giant Eagle Markets , Bruegger’s Beagles, Heinz, DelMonte, Food Lion, Kings Family Restaurants, Morton’s Steak House, Church’s Chicken, Boston Market.”

Apart from the portfolio page, he provides tips and articles on how to take food photography. Do check all out, it will be useful for those who wonder what is the best way to capture those sizzling steak on the plate or the mouthwatering waffle with berries. :)

How To Make Sushi

Suddenly I feel the urge to eat sushi..huhuhu..browsing through the web I found one good website teaching the basic of sushi making. Check it out.

I never knew that’s how they make the omelette for sushi..no wonder the omelette looks layered…but I dont think I will try to do it at home, it will defeat the purpose of dining out for sushi if I do it on my own..hahaha..

Searching further I found this commercialized website, it’s not your kind of original sushi as this one serves sushi for dessert. Check this site. Perhaps this one is a good idea for Valentine gift this year.

I was searching for tips and correct techniques to implement in my photography quest when I stumbled upon this site. I find the tips are very useful and the pictures are too good and look yummy, enough to entice people to eat if posted on the restaurant’s advertisement fliers and posters.
While I continue to Google for tips, I found this link is useful as well. It has links and tips from other site (though some are not available anymore). But at least it has excerpts from the non existing sites. :)

How to Be Creative If You Never Thought You Could

htbcreative.jpg

It’s a book title written by Tera Leigh. Quoted from her website, “I wrote this book with two audiences in mind,” explains Leigh.

“One, the person who does not feel creative, but has always had the desire to break through.

Two, the struggling creative who has discovered their own creativity but find themselves blocked in moving forward to their best creative work.

In each chapter you will find exercises and ideas for taking the things you have learned and spreading your creative wings a bit.”

I will check this title out in the local bookstores, if it’s not available maybe I have to order through Amazon.com.
